Suited satirist: Polly Courtney reveals uncomfortable truths about the macho world of investment banking Mike is earmarked from the start as an employee with high-powered potential; Cambridge grad Abby has seemingly been hired purely to maintain the employee gender equilibrium and languishes on meaningless tasks. Their interweaving stories, which inevitably involve a fair degree of sex, mainly with each other, never escape the confines of popular fiction but Courtney's light, witty touch nonetheless raises serious points about the insidious misogyny within a testosterone-fuelled industry. The clichés are applied thickly but her biting descriptions neatly expose the banality of a macho culture addicted to its own mythology. |
